We are Jon, Elise, Elliot (6) and Samuel (4) Fletcher, a family from Shrewsbury in Shropshire where we have put down deep roots over twenty years! We love our beautiful town and the surrounding hills but most of all our local estate community. All four of us share a love of Narnia, notebooks and peanut butter, and we all enjoy walking our Border Collie Peggy. Elliot and Sam are a bit keener on early mornings than their parents and like to wake up early to maximise lego time before school! Jon and Elise have been married for ten years and both graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2006 (where Jon studied Medicine and Elise studied English Literature).
Jon has gone on to train as a GP and now works in our local practice where he is passionate about holistic care of patients. Elise has worked with Youth For Christ and in other youth-work roles but has drifted into children’s ministry since having children. All of us look forward to Friday night organised chaos at our church kids club! We are part of Shrewsbury Baptist Church, a wonderful outward looking community where we have felt loved and nurtured over many years.
As a family, we have been exploring the call to stand with the poor that we see modelled beautifully in Jesus. Engaging with the facts about wealth inequality has quickly led us to identify with the massive problem of urban poverty. Currently one person in every seven of the world’s population lives in a slum. It is projected that by 2050 this figure could rise to half the world’s population. Over the past year we have discerned a specific call to relocate and be signs of hope in an urban community.
